Principles

Built on a simple foundation

BUB is a personal project developed voluntarily, with no commercial interests attached. Every design decision flows from these commitments.

📵

Offline first

All Bible text, commentaries, lexicons, maps, and genealogy data are bundled on-device. The app functions fully with no network connection at all.

🔒

Zero data collection

BUB collects no personal data, no usage analytics, and no crash reports. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and nothing is ever sent anywhere.

$

Free, no ads

The app is free to install and free to use. There are no in-app purchases, no subscription tiers, no ads, and no paywalled content.

⚖️

Open source & public domain

Every library, Bible translation, commentary, lexicon, and dataset used in BUB is either open-source or public domain. Nothing is behind a proprietary license.

🤝

Voluntarily developed

BUB is built and maintained as a personal hobby project by evanda. It exists because it's useful, not because there's money in it.

Text-first

The app is designed for serious engagement with Scripture. The text is always central; every other feature is a tool to illuminate it.

Content

Built from the best open sources

Every piece of content in BUB is public domain or openly licensed. Here's what's bundled.

Bible Translations

Berean Standard Bible & KJV

The Berean Standard Bible is the default translation — a modern, readable English Bible dedicated to the public domain in 2023. Every BSB word is aligned to its Hebrew or Greek Strong's number, so tapping any word shows the original language definition instantly. The King James Version (1611) is also included and switchable at any time.

Commentary

200+ Church Fathers & Reformers

62,000+ entries from Augustine, Calvin, Luther, Matthew Henry, Spurgeon, Ryle, and many more.

Original Languages

Strong's Hebrew & Greek Lexicons

8,674 Hebrew + 5,624 Greek entries with definitions, etymology, and KJV usage. James Strong, 1890.

Cross-References

~340,000 verse pairs

Scripture cross-references from OpenBible.info (CC BY 4.0), linking related passages across the whole Bible.

Geography

~700 Geocoded Biblical Places

From OpenBible.info (CC BY 4.0). Every major city, mountain, river, and region — plotted on an interactive map.

Genealogy

~3,500 Biblical People

From the Theographic Bible Metadata project (CC BY-SA 4.0). Family relationships from Adam to Jesus and beyond.

Hymns

70 Classic Hymns

Scripture-indexed public-domain hymns (all pre-1928) from Watts, Wesley, Newton, Crosby, Luther, and others.
